Title 1 is a federally funded program designed to offer extra academic assistance to students who need help in meeting high state and school district standards.  Title 1 has been in existence since 1965 and continues to provide students with supplemental language arts and mathematics practice that enhances their ability to succeed in the regular curriculum.  The Dennis Township School District's Basic Skills program currently services over 100 students.  Additionally, Dennis Township School District personnel teach in our neighboring school where Title 1 supports eligible students at the Bishop McHugh Catholic School.  

Basic skills support is offered to students who need additional help in the areas of reading, language arts and mathematics. Qualification for the program is determined by a number of criteria including standardized test scores, teacher recommendation, and report card grades.

A qualified teacher provides this additional support, and the teacher will generally work with a small group of students either within or in a supplemental fashion outside of their regular classroom setting. The instructional program for the student is based on his/her individual needs.

Parents are involved in their children's Title 1 participation right from the beginning.  When a student is determined to be eligible for Title 1 services, parents are notified.  After personal or telephone conferences and written explanations regarding the services, parents sign a letter endorsing their approval for their child to participate.  The district asks for support and involvement from the our families throughout the year, including: participation in parent site council meetings, attendance at our literacy and math nights, attendance at conferences, and daily assistance for their children in literacy and mathematics activities.
